I follow Graham Linehan on Twitter – he’s the guy who wrote the brilliant Father Ted. On Tuesday 10th of February a discussion sprang up about bad movies. Shortly afterwards Graham posted this tweet:

Then things really got moving. The basic idea is to simultaneously watch a specific movie and tweet your commentary. First one is tonight at 9pm(GMT) – in this case the community decided on M. Knight Shayamalan’s ‘The Happening’ – I’ve seen it and it is truly, truly awful.
At 9pm (GMT), everyone hits play and then you can Follow / add your own commentary Tweets by using the tag #badmovieclub or following @Glinner. It’s Mystery Science Theatre 3000 for the 21st Century.
What’s amazing is the speed at which this has come together. It’s now Friday, 3 days after the original Tweet was posted. In that time we have a website, a set of rules and a smattering of celebrities driving this thing forward. On Tweetscoop the results are apparent:
No-one directly involved is making money (but I’ll bet there are draft biz-plans being drawn up as we speak) – everyone is just enjoying the ride. The beneficiaries are the high-street retailers and Amazon right now. There’s even advice on where to get the cheapest copy of the DVD (and you don’t want to spend much on this particular film).
I’m looking forward to seeing how this one evolves – it could become huge.

Update: seems the MD of Amazon is now asking about the event…
